Brothers And Keepers: A Memoir Of Friendship, Family, And Finding Your Place In The World Brothers And Keepers: A Memoir

In his powerful and moving memoir, Brothers and Keepers, David Chariandy tells the story of his coming-of-age in the vibrant and often troubled city of Scarborough, Ontario. Chariandy's writing is lyrical and evocative, capturing the sights, sounds, and smells of his childhood home with vivid precision. He also delves deeply into the complex relationships between family members, friends, and lovers, exploring the ways in which we both support and betray each other.

Chariandy was born in Scarborough to Trinidadian parents. His father, a teacher, was a strict disciplinarian who instilled in his son a strong sense of responsibility. His mother, a nurse, was a more gentle and nurturing presence, but she also struggled with depression and anxiety. Chariandy's parents' marriage was often strained, and they eventually divorced when he was in high school.

Chariandy's childhood was marked by both joy and pain. He had a close relationship with his younger brother, Marcus, and the two of them spent countless hours playing together and exploring their neighborhood. However, Chariandy also witnessed the violence and poverty that was all too common in Scarborough at the time. He saw friends and family members fall victim to drugs, gangs, and crime.

Despite the challenges he faced, Chariandy excelled in school and eventually went on to university. However, he never forgot his roots, and he often returned to Scarborough to visit his family and friends. In Brothers and Keepers, Chariandy writes about the people who shaped his life, the experiences that made him who he is, and the struggles he has faced along the way.

Brothers and Keepers is a beautifully written and deeply moving memoir. Chariandy's writing is both personal and universal, and his story will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to find their place in the world.
