Chen Rong was born in 1951, the daughter of a high-ranking Communist Party official. She grew up in a privileged environment, but she was also aware of the poverty and inequality that existed outside the walls of her family's home. When the Cultural Revolution began in 1966, Chen Rong was a teenager. She was swept up in the revolutionary fervor, and she joined the Red Guards. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a leader of her local Red Guard group. As a Red Guard, Chen Rong participated in the persecution of teachers and other intellectuals. She also witnessed the violence and brutality that was taking place throughout China. But as the Cultural Revolution progressed, Chen Rong began to have doubts about what she was ng. She saw that the revolution was not bringing about the promised utopia. Instead, it was tearing China apart.
In 1969, Chen Rong was arrested and imprisoned. She was tortured and subjected to political indoctrination. But even in the face of such adversity, she never lost her hope. She continued to believe that China could change for the better. After her release from prison, Chen Rong worked to rebuild her life. She became a teacher and a writer. She also became involved in the pro-democracy movement. In 1989, she was one of the student leaders of the Tiananmen Square protests. Chen Rong's story is a testament to the power of the human spirit. She survived the Cultural Revolution and went on to become a leading advocate for democracy and human rights in China. Her memoir, An Uncommon Red Guard, is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand this tumultuous period in Chinese history.
