William was born into a wealthy and influential family in the County of Nassau, in what is now Germany. He was a devout Protestant and a strong opponent of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty that ruled the Netherlands at the time. When the Spanish began to persecute Protestants in the Netherlands, William joined forces with other Dutch nobles to resist Spanish rule.

The Dutch Revolt began in 1568 and lasted for 80 years. William played a key role in the revolt, both as a military leader and as a political figure. He was a brilliant strategist and a charismatic leader, and he inspired the Dutch people to fight for their independence.

In 1581, William was assassinated by a Spanish agent. His death was a major blow to the Dutch cause, but it also served to galvanize the Dutch people and strengthen their resolve to achieve independence. The Dutch Republic was finally established in 1648, and William of Orange is widely credited as being the architect of the Dutch nation.

The Legacy of William of Orange
