Born into a poor family in a log cabin in Kentucky, Lincoln had little formal education. Yet, through his own self-education and hard work, he became a successful lawyer and politician.

Lincoln's political career was marked by his unwavering opposition to slavery. He believed that all people were created equal and deserved to be treated with dignity and respect.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States. Shortly after his inauguration, the Civil War broke out. Lincoln led the Union through the war, which resulted in the emancipation of slaves and the preservation of the Union.

Lincoln's assassination in 1865 was a tragedy that cut short a promising life. However, his legacy continues to inspire people around the world.

Early Life and Education

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents, Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, were poor farmers.

Lincoln had little formal education. He attended school for only about a year. However, he was a voracious reader and spent much of his time studying books.

In 1830, Lincoln's family moved to Illinois. Lincoln worked as a farmhand and a store clerk. He also began studying law. In 1834, he passed the bar exam and became a lawyer.

Political Career

Lincoln's political career began in 1834 when he was elected to the Illinois legislature. He served in the legislature for eight years.

In 1846, Lincoln was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House for one term.

In 1858, Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate against Stephen Douglas. Lincoln lost the election, but his famous "House Divided" speech helped to make him a national figure.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States. He was the first Republican to be elected President.

Civil War

Shortly after Lincoln's inauguration, the Civil War broke out. The war was fought between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states).

The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. More than 600,000 people died in the war.

Lincoln led the Union through the war. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states.

In 1865, the Union defeated the Confederacy. The war ended slavery and preserved the Union.

Assassination

On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Booth was a Confederate sympathizer who was angry at Lincoln for winning the war.

Lincoln's assassination was a tragedy. He was only 56 years old.

Legacy

Abraham Lincoln is one of the most iconic and influential figures in American history. His life story is a testament to the power of determination, perseverance, and unwavering belief in one's ideals.

Lincoln's legacy continues to inspire people around the world. He is remembered as a great leader who fought for freedom and equality.
