In 1975, the Khmer Rouge, a communist regime led by Pol Pot, seized power in Cambodia and embarked on a brutal campaign to create a classless society. Over the next four years, the regime killed an estimated 2 million people, nearly a quarter of the country's population.

Loung Ung was just five years old when the Khmer Rouge came to power. She and her family were forced to leave their home in Phnom Penh and march to a labor camp in the countryside. There, they were subjected to starvation, torture, and execution.

Loung's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the horrors she witnessed, she never gave up hope. She found strength in her family and in her belief in the power of love.

In 1979, the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge. Loung and her family were finally able to return to Phnom Penh. But the scars of the genocide remained.

Loung's memoir, Survival in the Killing Fields, is a powerful and moving account of her experiences during the Cambodian genocide. It is a story of hope and resilience, and a reminder of the importance of never giving up.
