About the Author

Benjamin O. Davis Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., in 1912. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1936 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. In 1941, he was assigned to the Tuskegee Army Air Field, where he became the commander of the 99th Fighter Squadron.

Under Davis's leadership, the 99th Fighter Squadron became one of the most successful fighter squadrons in the war. The squadron flew over 1,500 combat missions and shot down over 200 enemy aircraft. Davis was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Silver Star for his bravery and leadership.

After the war, Davis continued to serve in the Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 with the rank of brigadier general. He died in 2002 at the age of 89.
