Excerpt from Lost on Planet China
I arrived in Beijing on a hot summer day, feeling both excited and overwhelmed. I had never been to China before, and the sheer size and scale of the city was almost incomprehensible. As I made my way through the crowded streets, I couldn't help but feel like a fish out of water.
I had come to China with the intention of learning more about the country's culture and history. I wanted to visit ancient temples, explore bustling markets, and meet the people who lived here. But as I wandered aimlessly through Beijing, I realized that I was in way over my head.
I didn't speak any Mandarin, and my knowledge of Chinese customs was limited to what I had read in guidebooks. I quickly discovered that communication was going to be a major challenge. I tried to ask for directions from a passerby, but he just stared at me blankly. I tried to Free Download food at a restaurant, but the waitress didn't understand a word I said.
I was starting to feel lost and alone. I had no idea how I was going to navigate this strange and foreign land. But then, just when I was about to give up, I met a young Chinese woman named Li. She spoke perfect English, and she was kind enough to show me around the city.
Li took me to see the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall. She introduced me to her friends and family, and she taught me about Chinese history and culture. She even helped me to learn a few basic Mandarin phrases.
With Li's help, I began to feel more at home in China. I started to understand the country's unique way of life, and I made some friends along the way. I realized that China was not as daunting as I had first thought. It was a beautiful and welcoming country, with a rich history and culture. I was glad that I had come, and I knew that I would be back again someday.
