As a platoon commander with the Régiment de Maisonneuve, Gallant landed on Juno Beach, facing intense German resistance. Despite heavy casualties, he led his men with unwavering determination, inspiring them to fight back and secure a foothold on the beachhead.

Throughout the ensuing Battle of Normandy, Gallant's leadership and courage were a beacon of hope for his fellow soldiers. He personally led numerous charges against enemy positions, capturing objectives and taking prisoners. For his exceptional bravery, he was awarded the Silver Star, the third-highest military decoration in the United States.

From Normandy to the Far East

After the liberation of Europe, Gallant continued his service overseas, participating in the Korean War as a United Nations observer. His fearless actions and diplomatic skills earned him the respect and admiration of both sides of the conflict.

Upon returning to Canada, Gallant held various command positions within the Canadian Armed Forces, including as commander of the Royal Canadian Regiment. He retired from active service in 1967, with the rank of Brigadier-General.
