In 1933, when Keilson was just 24 years old, the Nazis came to power. As a Jew, Keilson was immediately targeted for persecution. He was forced to leave his job, his friends, and his family behind. He fled to the Netherlands, where he hoped to find safety.

But the Nazis were relentless in their pursuit of Jews. In 1942, Keilson was captured and sent to the Westerbork transit camp. From there, he was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the most notorious concentration camps in history.

Keilson spent three years in Auschwitz. During that time, he witnessed unspeakable horrors. He saw people being gassed, tortured, and starved to death. He himself was subjected to beatings, starvation, and disease. Yet, through it all, he never lost his humanity.

In 1945, Keilson was liberated from Auschwitz. He was one of the few survivors of the camp. After the war, Keilson returned to the Netherlands, where he began to rebuild his life.

One of the most important ways that Keilson healed from his experiences was through writing. In 1946, he began writing a diary about his time in Auschwitz. The diary was published in 1964 and became an instant bestseller.

Keilson's diary is a powerful and moving account of the Holocaust. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It is also a reminder of the importance of never forgetting the victims of the Holocaust.

Hans Keilson died in 2011 at the age of 101. He left behind a legacy of hope, courage, and compassion.
